Although motor vehicle accidents in West Virginia can happen in the blink of an eye, the results can have lasting effects. When individuals are involved in motor vehicle accidents, they are sometimes able to walk away with minor injuries. However, it is all too often the case that serious injuries — or worse — result from a crash.
A recent car accident sent at least four individuals to a local hospital. According to the police, the driver of an SUV attempted to make an illegal U-turn across a highway median by using an exit for emergency vehicles. As the driver tried to make the turn, the SUV pulled into the other side of the road and into the path of a van traveling in the opposite direction. The van crashed into the driver’s side of the SUV.
Each of the vehicles contained multiple passengers, and each passenger suffered multiple injuries. Two passengers were rushed by helicopter to a local medical center with serious injuries while another two were transported there by ambulance. Authorities are unclear as to why the driver of the SUV was attempting to use the emergency vehicle exit. If that had not occurred, this accident would have been avoided.
Individuals who suffer serious injuries in motor vehicle accidents in West Virginia may make the decision to pursue a civil claim against the driver believed to have been responsible for the crash. Depending on the underlying acts, other parties may be named as defendants as well. A claim, if successfully litigated, could result in monetary restitution that could be used to help pay for the victim’s medical bills as well as make up for lost pay and other damages due to the accident. Consulting an experienced personal injury attorney is typically advisable after an accident to determine whether a valid case exists.
