Coal mine accidents: 1 dead after being struck by slab of coal

Mining companies and officials in West Virginia and elsewhere are constantly coming up with new ways to increase workplace safety. Despite these efforts, coal mine accidents continue to be a significant concern, leaving many families to grieve the untimely loss of a loved one. An incident at a coal mine in another state recently claimed the life of a man who was reportedly crushed by a slab of coal.

The incident is said to have occurred around 4 p.m. on a recent Thursday as a worker was moving equipment inside the mine. According to reports, a large portion of coal suddenly came loose and struck the man. Several other workers were apparently nearby, and began to apply first aid while awaiting emergency responders. An ambulance arrived shortly thereafter to transport him to the hospital, but he was unfortunately pronounced dead while in transit.

Although an investigation into the incident is reportedly underway, there has been no indication of what might have caused the slab of coal to break loose. Individuals who work in a similar profession may be subjected to hazardous environments on a daily basis. For those who operate inside a mine, the danger of falling objects is ever-present, and incidents that occur under similar circumstances can lead to serious injuries, or worse.

Along with the emotional grief of such a loss, families of victims of fatal coal mine accidents may also experience monetary hardships that can place them under a significant financial burden. When facing a similar situation, a family could speak with an experienced attorney for advice on available options for restitution. An attorney in West Virginia can evaluate the incident, along with the client’s financial needs, and assist in pursuing the full amount of compensation entitled through every applicable outlet.
