1 killed, 1 injured in car accident during high speed pursuit

Attempting to evade a routine traffic stop is never advisable and such a decision may only lead to a subsequent high speed pursuit that places everyone involved in harm’s way. While passengers who travel with a driver who exhibits such behavior may have little control over the situation, their well-being may still be placed at risk. One person died and another was airlifted to a hospital after a recent pursuit-related car accident in West Virginia.

According to reports, the incident began after authorities encountered a driver traveling above the speed limit at around 1 a.m. on a recent Friday. After attempting to initiate a routine traffic stop, they say the driver proceeded to flee the scene, prompting a high speed pursuit. During the pursuit, the driver reportedly crashed into the rear of a nearby tractor-trailer.

Authorities advised that the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A passenger in the vehicle reportedly suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital before being airlifted to another facility for additional treatment. While the incident is under investigation, no further information was provided as to why the driver may have attempted to evade authorities.

It may take little more than a single act of negligence to prompt a car accident that places the safety of all parties involved in jeopardy. Individuals who suffer severe harm under similar scenarios may wish to better understand all the available options with which to seek restitution, but navigating the civil justice system can be a complex process. Fortunately, there are attorneys in West Virginia who can help a person better prepare to pursue the compensation entitled through a personal injury claim.
