James Woodrow "Woody” Hill is an associate of Hill, Peterson, Carper, Bee & Deitzler P.L.L.C. Before joining this firm, Mr. Hill worked for a law firm which represented businesses and individuals in general and complex litigation, with an emphasis on matters involving business disputes, including lender liability cases, general contract disputes, and civil RICO cases; defense of product liability cases, defense of professional malpractice cases; catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases for plaintiffs and defendants; and selected “white collar” criminal defense cases. Now Mr. Hill represents individuals that have been seriously injured or families of those that have lost their lives as a result of another’s negligence. Mr. Hill has devoted much of his practice to handling automobile collision cases.

EDUCATION: Mr. Hill was among the first graduates of Capital High School: 1990. He attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1994 with a B.A. degree in Political Science / Pre-Law. After five years in the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Hill attended the West Virginia University’s College of Law, graduating in 2002. While in law school, Mr. Hill served as the Research Editor of the West Virginia Law Review. He managed to finish all required courses early so he was given the opportunity to participate in a new program which allows law students to clerk for federal judges in lieu of attending classes. Additionally, Mr. Hill has attended and received recognition from the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER: Upon graduating from college in 1994, Mr. Hill enlisted in the Marines. Mr. Hill finished boot camp at the top of his battalion and was meritoriously promoted and assigned to the Marine Corps Combat Engineer Battalion, located in Cross Lanes, West Virginia. Within a month, he was accepted into Officer Candidate’s School. After being commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Mr. Hill was stationed at Tustin Marine Corps base in Orange County, California. There he served as the Officer In Charge of the Motor Transport and Maintenance Divisions. After discovering Mr. Hill’s background in the law, his Commanding Officer directed him to attend the Department of the Navy’s Naval Justice Academy to be trained as the command’s Legal Officer. Mr. Hill then worked as a liaison between his Commanding Officer and the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. His duties included investigating accidents and aiding in the prosecution of crimes committed by and against Marines.

PUBLIC SERVICE: Mr. Hill currently serves as the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 71. Troop 71 was founded in 1931 and is chartered by Wesley United Methodist Church, located in Charleston’s West Side. Wesley Church was founded by Mr. Hill’s great-great-grandfather Simon Bailey.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS: Mr. Hill is a member of the West Virginia Association for Justice, the American Association for Justice, Public Justice, the West Virginia State Bar Association, and the Kanawha County Bar Association.

PERSONAL INTERESTS: In addition to Mr. Hill’s love of the outdoors and the Boy Scouts, he is an avid musician and plays in a local rock band with other area professionals and a Christian Rock band. He plays classical, acoustic, electric, and bass guitar; and regularly teaches music to Boy Scouts at Wesley Church. Mr. Hill enjoys spending time with his family boating on the Kanawha River.
