Distraction: one the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents

West Virginia readers know that distracted driving is one of the leading dangers on the road, but distracted behavior is not limited to young drivers. Parents and older drivers are also prone to look at their phones behind the wheel, contributing to the high number of motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted driving. Just a few seconds of distraction can lead to serious or fatal consequences.

Teenagers are often blamed for the majority of distracted driving accidents as they are associated with checking Snapchat, using Facebook and texting behind the wheel. However, studies show that their parents are just as prone to picking up their phones while driving. In fact, a recent poll found that 56 percent of parents admitted to checking their phones while driving.

Researchers find these numbers to be troubling as there is a nationwide effort underway to expose the dangers of distracted driving and educate teens on safe decisions behind the wheel. However, if parents are seen using their phones, teenagers are more prone to follow their example. Any driver, no matter his or her age, can be held accountable for their actions behind the wheel, and victims may have grounds to seek financial compensation.

When a person is harmed by the actions of a distracted driver, legal options are available. It is possible to secure restitution for any pain and suffering, but it is important to seek the help of an experienced personal injury attorney. A case evaluation will outline potential options and identify the most appropriate course of action for victims of motor vehicle accidents in West Virginia.
