Xarelto

Xarelto is an anticoagulant or blood thinner manufactured by Bayer. Its generic name is rivaroxaban. It is made of an oxazolidinone derivative that inhibits the pathways of coagulation. The FDA approved Xarelto in July 2011 "for the prevention (prophylaxis) of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which may lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE) in people undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery" and "to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have abnormal heart rhythm (nonvalvular atrial fibrillation)." For doctors and patients seeking to reduce risks of blood clots that could cause these debilitating and even life-threatening conditions, Xarelto has held appeal. Marketing by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson for this billion-dollar drug has been extensive. A year's supply for one patient can cost $3,000, significantly more than previously common drugs used for similar purposes.

When Side Effects Of A Dangerous Drug Cause Harm Or Even Death
Unfortunately, side effects of Xarelto have included severe internal bleeding for some patients. Brain hemorrhage has triggered strokes in some patients. Some consumers of this drug have suffered extensive hospitalization. Others have died of serious bleeding effects after taking Xarelto.

German regulators reported this risk beginning in 2011 and 2012. Over time, the numbers of affected consumers have increased. The first lawsuits in the United States against the manufacturers appeared in the summer of 2014. These lawsuits have alleged that Bayer did not properly notify the public of known hazards of the drug.
