C8 Science Panel Reports and Findings

Probable Link Findings, Pregnancy Induced Hypertension, December 5, 2011

On Monday, December 5, 2011, the independent C8 Science Panel reported that it had found a link between exposure to C8 in drinking water and pregnancy induced hypertension and preeclampsia.

This is the first of several anticipated findings from the panel, but what is significant is that it is the first confirmed report of the probable link between serious human disease and exposure to C8 contaminated water.  These initial findings from the panel confirm our original concerns that C8 must be removed from all public drinking water sources immediately.

As counsel for all of the affected people who have been patiently waiting for information about what impact C8 has had, and will have, upon their health, we are thankful to the science panel for its hard work.

We particularly appreciate that the panel is fulfilling its commitment to the Class and community by announcing its findings as soon as its decision was made, rather than waiting until it has completed all of its work.

The Probable Link findings announced by the Panel are not surprising based on the current state of scientific literature and studies of health effects associated with exposure to PFOA.

We are pleased that our Class Members and the community now have some initial answers to their concerns about whether they are at risk for adverse reproductive health effects as a result of their exposure to PFOA.

Our clients and friends look forward to having the other Probable Link determinations issued as promptly as the Science Panel completes each successive determination that it has under consideration.

Now that the first link has been verified, we will immediately begin working with Dupont to implement the medical monitoring phase as required by the settlement agreement.

Shockingly, Dupont is issuing press releases disputing the independent science panel’s impartial scientifiic findings.  This is particularly disturbing because Dupont made a big deal of pointing out how it wanted a fair scientific resolution of this question at our settlement conferences five years ago.  In fact, Dupont helped pick the panel about which they are now complaining.  Shame on you Dupont!
